Water Fire Extinguishers

Water fire extinguishers are the most common type of fire extinguisher. They are used on Class A fires, which are fuelled by combustible carbon-based materials like wood and textiles. Most commercial and domestic premises are at risk from Class A fires.

Water fire extinguishers cannot be used on flammable liquids or on electrical fires. All commercial premises must have extinguishers designed to tackle Class A fires on every floor. Fire Protection Online only stocks high-quality, fully accredited water fire extinguishers in six and nine litre sizes, in both traditional red and polished aluminium.

How do water fire extinguishers work?

Water fire extinguishers use a simple jet of water, which has a cooling effect on fires (removing heat from the fire triangle of heat, fuel and oxygen).

There are other kinds of extinguishers which are water-based, including water additive extinguishers and water mist fire extinguishers.

What colour is a water fire extinguisher?

Water fire extinguishers are completely signal red. They can also come with a chrome finish which does not conform to BS EN 3, but will be preferable in some settings due to their striking design and appearance.

Both colours meet the legal requirements for premises covered by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO).

What can water fire extinguishers be used on?

Flammable solids like wood, paper and organic materials are a very common fuel for fires. These fires are known as Class A fires and water fire extinguishers are used to put out fire in this category.

Textiles, for example curtains, come under this category too. Water fire extinguishers are therefore needed often and should be available in all commercial buildings, with staff members trained in how to use them.

How to use a water fire extinguisher

Water fire extinguishers should only be used on small fires. They are simple and safe to operate, however all users of commercial premises should be trained how and when to use them.

The extinguisher will have a safety pin. Pulling this will break the tamper seal, and the lever can now be squeezed. This will discharge the water, which can then be aimed at the base of the fire. Your building’s designated Responsible Persons will be able to advise you on this in more detail, as well as show you the location of all fire extinguishers in your building.

How do I refill a water fire extinguisher?

It is recommended you employ a professional to refill your water fire extinguisher. If you elect to do this yourself your extinguisher will not be compliant with British Standards. Extinguishers are also pressurised, and so tampering with them can be dangerous.

More information on how to refill fire extinguishers can be found in this guide.
