Wheelchair Fire Exit Signs

As with regular fire exit signs, employers have a responsibility to provide clear signage along escape routes for wheelchair users. These come in the same distinct layout and green background, with the addition of the EU-recognised wheelchair symbol.

All of our wheelchair fire exit signs are made from durable, premium-grade plastic for long-lasting reliability. We also use Jalite AAA photoluminescent materials to ensure they are visible in all lighting conditions.

Whether you're looking for wall-fixed or hanging variations, we've got you covered. We even supply safe refuge area and evacuation chair signs. All are compliant with EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) standards.

What are the disabled fire escape regulations?

The Equality Act 2010 advises all employers to review their fire safety procedures to ensure they do not discriminate against anyone with disabilities. Fire risk assessments and evacuation plans should take into account wheelchair users and those with mobility restrictions. Any risks or barriers that could delay or prevent someone with health conditions or impairments getting to safety should be immediately overcome.

Where it is not possible for a disabled person to safely evacuate the building via the normal escape route, employers should allocate a safe refuge area. This is a safe space for the person to call and wait for help. If there is a wheelchair-safe fire exit route, then wheelchair fire exit signs should be used to guide occupants to safety.

There are also additional measures that can be put in place to assist with quickly and safely evacuating those with mobility impairments. Such as installing an evacuation chair to help with stairs.

Where should wheelchair fire exit signs be placed?

Wheelchair fire exit signs should follow the same protocol as regular fire exit signage. When guiding occupants along the escape route, then signs with arrows are a must. A fire risk assessment will identify the right points along the route that the signs should be placed. For example, straight ahead or down to the left. Wheelchair fire exit signs make it clear to those with mobility restrictions that the route is accommodated for them. Having clear signage along the route also helps give reassurance, as well as assist those who are unfamiliar with the building layout.

We have a wide selection of fixed signs which are ideal for placing on walls and doors. Whilst our double-sided hanging signs can help instruct people from both directions and can’t be missed. Fire safety guidelines advise that adequate illumination be used in areas with poor lighting. However, all our wheelchair fire exit signs are made from AAA photoluminescent material to ensure they can always be seen, even during a power outage.
