Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Dry powder extinguishers smother and suffocate fires by forming a barrier between fuel and the source of oxygen. Powder extinguishers contain a multi-purpose powder that can typically be used on Class A, B and C fires, or just on Class B and C fires, though some specialist options are designed for Class D fires. Dry powder fire extinguishers are often known as ABC or BC extinguishers because of their versatility in tackling different kinds of fires.

Browse our selection of powder fire extinguishers, available in a variety of sizes - from small 1kg extinguishers for cars to larger 9kg dry powder extinguishers for offices, hotels and industrial premises. What is a powder fire extinguisher?

Powder fire extinguishers are filled with powder, such as ammonium or mono-ammonium phosphate, rather than water, foam or other chemicals, and are pressurised with nitrogen. The chemical compounds in the powder of these extinguishers are designed to expand in heat, creating a barrier layer between flames and oxygen to prevent the fire from growing and smother the existing fire.

What is a powder fire extinguisher used for?

Powder fire extinguishers can tackle different types of fire - (usually Class A, B and C, or just Class B and C) - hence being sometimes referred to as ABC or BC dry powder fire extinguishers. Dry powder extinguishers are generally red (apart from our stylish designer fire extinguishers) and have a blue panel visibly showing the words "DRY POWDER" on the side.

Some specialist powder extinguishers are suitable for Class D fires (combustible metal fires). These are extinguishers containing sodium, magnesium and aluminium, and include M28 and L2 powder options – like our 9kg L2 fire extinguisher

We supply powder extinguishers in a variety of sizes, from small 1kg powder fire extinguishers for cars, 2kg extinguishers for the home, plus 4kg, 6kg and 9kgs for offices, hotels, industrial premises, manufacturing and any location with space for the fire to spread. 3kg and 12kg powder extinguishers are commonly found on lorries and vehicles carrying dangerous goods, to comply with ADR regulations.

For higher fire risks, wheeled powder extinguishers are supplied in larger capacities, including 25kg, a 45kg Monnex powder extinguisher, a powerful 50kg dry powder model and a massive 100kg capacity powder extinguisher for large warehouses, building sites, industrial workshops, etc.

When should you not use a dry powder fire extinguisher?

There are some instances where it would be dangerous to use a dry powder fire extinguisher. Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats have a higher flash point in temperature, which needs to be reduced before either the fuel, oxygen or heat can be eradicated to stop the fire, meaning powder extinguishers aren’t suitable. Pan fires in kitchens can spread remarkably quickly, and these types of fires should be extinguished with a wet chemical fire extinguisher that contains potassium salts to cool the flames and smother the fire's oxygen content.

Do note that although ABC dry powder extinguishers are the most versatile type of fire extinguisher, the powder can be harmful if inhaled or makes contact with the skin. The powder can also reduce visibility in the event of an evacuation, therefore is not suitable for poorly ventilated or enclosed spaces.
