What Should Be in a First Aid Kit?

The specific contents of a first aid kit will vary depending on whether they are for home, travel or workplace use, but as a general rule, they should include as a minimum:

  • Plasters in a variety of sizes and shapes
  • Sterile gauze dressings
  • Bandages and safety pins
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Alcohol-free cleansing wipes
  • Medical tape

First Aid Kit Boxes: Green For General Use

Familiar green first aid kit boxes are your first port of call for those everyday little accidents that require non-medical attention.

Our best selling small first aid kit is HSE approved, and comes in a convenient, air-tight plastic box that keeps the dust out and the contents held securely in. It contains sterile plasters, eye pads, medium and large size dressings, bandages, wipes, disposable gloves and those all-important safety pins.

HSE or BSI First Aid Kits?

A question we’re often asked is what the difference is between an HSE first aid kit and a BSI first aid kit.

HSE first aid kits include the basics as recommended by the Health and Safety Executive’s latest guidance. These are smaller kits, but before you simply purchase the cheapest, the equipment available must be ‘adequate and appropriate in the circumstances’. For a small office with no specific risks, these are often fine.

Each employer is responsible for performing ongoing detailed risk assessments to ensure that the first aid provision remains appropriate to the workplace concerned.

BSI kits feature additional and more comprehensive contents to those minimum requirements set out in the First Aid at Work – Guidance on Regulations. These kits are developed with further items intended to address a wider range of the more common workplace injuries, such as burns or eye injuries.

As recommended by the British Standards Institute, the BS8599-1 standards establish enhanced minimum first aid kit recommendations that ensure you’re prepared for a wider-range of medical emergencies.

Larger Premises? Get a Larger First Aid Kit

For larger premises, you can order our 20 person and 50 person kits, ready to use. Consider the wall mounting bracket too, so your first aid kit is always to hand. Also remember that a first aid kit sign will help guide staff quickly and easily to the kit, and our photoluminescent sign will glow in the dark too - ideal if your kit is kept in a cupboard!
