First Aid Signs

It is a requirement for businesses to display appropriate first-aid signs in line with HSE guidelines. They are designed to help guide staff and emergency service workers to important medical supplies or vital medical equipment – such as an automated external defibrillator – as quickly as possible. First aid signs can also be used to inform occupants of the nearest first aider within the building.

All employers should have easy access to emergency washing facilities, including emergency eye wash, an emergency shower and drinking water. Our Health & Safety Compliant green first aid and medical signs help highlight the location of these all-important facilities.

We offer flush wall-mounted designs, as well as 90-degree and panoramic fixtures which are easy to install. All our first aid signs are made from durable, photoluminescent plastic for optimum visibility – no matter the lighting conditions.

What colour are first aid signs?

The Safety Signs & Signals Regulations 1996 advise that first aid signs should be square or rectangular in shape, with a green background and white text or graphics. The green space should also occupy at least 50% of the area. Green is used to symbolise safety and help.

Are first aid signs a legal requirement?

First aid and medical signs are recommended for all business premises. The current safety guidelines state "The Regulations place duties on employers in respect of risks to their employees with the principal duty being to ensure that safety signs are in place".

The HSE also states that all workplaces should have a fully stocked first aid kit, a trained first aider and adequate information for all employees on the first aid arrangements. This is where first aid signs come in.

Where should first aid signs be placed?

The placement of first aid signs is bespoke to your building and layout. Essentially, all signage should be as close to the equipment or facility as possible – for example, first aid boxes, emergency equipment, telephones, etc. They are there to help guide staff and emergency workers to the equipment as quickly and directly as possible.

In areas that may be less noticeable or hidden away, 90-degree signs are ideal. It's important to ensure that signage is as visible as possible.
