Manual Call Points

Manual fire alarm call points should be installed on all business and public premises. They allow occupants of the building to trigger the fire alarm system, should they discover fire before the detector.

In line with the latest BS 5839-6 fire recommendations, fire alarm call points should be easily located on each floor. They should also be no higher than 1.4 metres from the floor. This ensures the device can be reached by the majority of passers-by, including those in wheelchairs.

We have a large selection of manual call points. These include flush or boxed wall designs, as well as weatherproof and universal call points. You can also purchase door release and extinguishant release call points. Browse our full range with free next-day delivery on orders over £60.

What is a manual call point?

Manual fire alarm call points are small red boxes that are linked to the fire alarm system in a business or public premises. They allow occupants to trigger the alarm manually in the event of a fire. Manual call points are usually situated along corridors and escape routes. This means they can be easily triggered whilst evacuating the building.

According to the BS 5839-6 fire detection and fire alarm systems standards, fire alarm call points should be situated:

- No higher than 1.4 metres from the ground

- At least 30 metres from any point in the building

- On all floors

- In all high-risk areas

How often should you test manual fire alarm call points?

You should test all fire alarm call points as part of your routine fire alarm testing - this is weekly. If you're unable to test all the manual call points as part of your weekly procedure, you should alternate call point boxes on a bi-weekly basis.

In addition to weekly testing, the responsible fire marshall should be checking for any visual signs of damage, wear and tear or tampering on a daily basis. The whole fire alarm system should also be inspected by a qualified engineer every six months.

How to test a fire alarm call point

Manual call point testing procedures can differ slightly depending on the manufacturer. However, most follow similar steps to the below:

1. Insert the test key into the allocated slot on the call point box and unlock

2. Slide down the cover to move the glass. Or watch the glass automatically move out of place, depending on the manufacturer (this should sound the alarm)

3. Slide the cover back into position (if necessary) and lock the box using the test key

4. The glass should be back in its original position

4. Reset the alarm on the fire alarm control panel

What colour are fire alarm call points?

Fire alarm call points are red to align with other fire safety equipment and signage. Other manual call points for business and public buildings are coloured differently. Door release call points are green. And extinguishant release call points are yellow.
