It’s a cold, dark autumnal night, and things are starting to get scary. There are eerie, toothless, orange faces which glow in every single window.
Ghosts, skeletons, werewolves, vampires, and zombies are all walking the streets. And there are probably a few superheroes wandering around with a plethora of Disney characters too.
And that can only mean one thing: the spookiest night of the year—HALLOWEEN.
To keep these characters at bay, there is only one thing which can stop them… You need to stock up on sweets immediately.
In order to keep Halloween scary for all the right reasons, sweets will not be enough. Here are a few tips to make sure you all stay safe.
Ghostly Effects
Pumpkins are a Halloween favourite. But when you light them with an ordinary candle, you can’t leave them burning unattended and they do present a fire risk.
By using a battery-operated candle, you’ll be able to leave the pumpkin lit up all night to keep those spirits away. Or, with a lightstick, you’ll get 12 hours of light with a ghostly edge.
Imagine a pumpkin glowing green or red… Do something different which is not only scarier, but safer too.
Although traditionally a safety device, you can also have a lot of fun with lightsticks. Just ensure you save a few or have some safety lighting in case of emergency.
By cutting some eyeholes in cardboard tubes and placing coloured lightsticks in them, you’ll have spooky eyes all around your garden.
Threat Detector
Unfortunately, we have nothing that can help you to know when a graveyard of Zombies is about to come and knock on your door. However, we do have something which will let you know when a fire is just starting.
Every home needs multiple smoke alarms, with them located on every floor and in the rooms where your family spend most of their time. That way, you’ll be alerted to a fire breaking out.
When you know before it’s too late, you may be able to stop the fire. But more important is that you get everyone outside to safety.
And if your home already has these, and it should, then make sure you’re regularly checking that they all work.
Protect Yourselves
You should prepare for the worst. That way, you can take the action needed to stay safe without panicking. Keeping your fingers crossed that it won’t happen to you just isn’t enough.
And I’m not talking about having some wooden stakes handy to hammer through the heart of a vampire.
Having fire blankets and extinguishers in your home means you are well-equipped to handle a fire. Quick action can prevent a fire from spreading so it doesn’t damage your home, and ensures you’re all safe.
It’s important that everyone knows not only where to find fire blankets and extinguishers but also how to use them. Every second counts in an emergency, and you can’t afford to waste them finding the extinguisher or reading the instructions.
Preventing Danger
The best way of staying safe is to reduce the likelihood of fire in the first place.
Over the Halloween period, take extra care over where you place any decorations. It’s always best to avoid putting them too close to heaters and candles.
Of course, if you do light any candles, make sure you fully extinguish them when you leave the room, but consider using safer alternatives to light your home.
Take care with your outfit too. Many costumes are easily flammable, so stay alert and try to avoid wearing trailing fabric. And make sure you remember the stop, drop and roll method of putting out clothing fires.
And when you’re out, make sure you’re visible. The nights are getting darker earlier, so with lightsticks and torches, you can walk the streets more safely.
These few simple tips will take a weight off your mind, without you losing your head. That way, you can focus on enjoying the festivities.
Just keep an eye out for those supernatural beings wandering the streets at night.
