What are the fire door sign regulations?

Fire doors help stop the spread of a fire. Therefore it's essential that occupants are aware to keep fire doors closed and clear. Business owners and facilities managers have a legal obligation and duty of care to ensure that all fire doors are fitted with the mandatory signage, containing the relevant message or instruction.

The current fire safety regulations state that signage should be adequately illuminated in areas with low natural lighting. However, all our fire door signs are made with durable photoluminescent plastic, to ensure they can always be seen – even in a power cut or smoke-filled room.

To comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005, the appointed 'responsible person' should carry out regular risk assessments. This is to ensure that all safety measures – including fire door signs – are maintained. Failure to do so can result in large fines, but, more importantly, cost lives.

What colour are fire door signs?

Fire door signs are coloured blue, in line with the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations 1996. Blue is used for all mandatory signs and is frequently used in workplaces. They help instruct and guide occupants on what to do next – such as 'keep shut' or 'keep clear'. They can also advise on what protective clothing to wear, such as hi-vis jackets and protective footwear.

Where should fire door keep closed signs be fitted?

Fire door signs should be positioned on the door itself at an adequate height – typically at eye level. They should also be fixed on both sides of the door. Every door pane should have its own individual sign, so double doors must each have their own.
