Certain metals are highly combustible (Class D fires), and tackling fires where metal is involved requires a special type of powder fire extinguishers. Again, the key to safety in situations where such fires may exist is to provide full training in the use of powder extinguishers on metal fires.
The M28 powder extinguisher is the best tool for the job when tackling metal fires involving sodium, magnesium or aluminium. (Aluminium powder or swarf can be ignited.) It should not be used on lithium fires.
The specialist L2 powder fire extinguisher is particularly for use on lithium fires, although it can be used on all metal fires if required.
Both the L2 and M28 powder extinguishers come in 9kg extinguishers, and can be operated in temperatures ranging from -20 to 60 degrees.
The Monnex fire extinguisher is ideal for Class B and C fires where you need an extremely high extinguishing power.
Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers
Not all fires are the same, which is why there are different extinguishers to deal with different types of fires. Class F fires include those involving cooking oils and fats, so are a particular danger in commercial kitchens or food manufacture involving frying. A Class F fire involves such cooking fats as maize, olive or sunflower oils, and fats such as lard and butter.
The chemicals in a wet chemical extinguisher react to form a soapy layer on top of the oil or fat, smothering the surface and preventing any further fire and aid cooling fat.
Our lance nozzle allows you to stand well back when using the extinguisher, which despite a compact 6 litre capacity can tackle a massive 75 litre fat fire.
As with all specialised extinguisher, your staff require professional training in use of a wet chemical extinguisher to keep them safe in the event of an emergency. Since such extinguishers are just for fat fires, and must not be used on other types such as electrical fires, it also pays to have a wet chemical fire extinguisher sign showing all staff exactly when and how to use this specialised fire extinguisher.
