If your business has a high pedestrian footfall, such as a car park, school or event venue, you'll already know the importance of safe driving. Speed bumps not only encourage responsible driving by reducing speed, but they are also a great traffic control solution, alongside our car park equipment, helping to minimise congestion in high-vehicle areas. Our premium speed bumps, part of our lineup of traffic management equipment, help reduce the risk of collisions, whilst maintaining a smooth flow of traffic.

We supply high-visibility 5 mph and 10 mph complete speed bump kits – available in a range of sizes – which have everything ready for installation.

Which Speed Bump do I need?

When it comes to deciding which speed ramp you want to install in your car park or private road, you first need to consider the vehicles which will be driving over them every day and the speed you them to travel.

50mm speed bumps are designed to be driven over at 10mph, anymore and it’ll be very uncomfortable for drivers and passengers. Our 10mph speed bump is only designed for light use, so is perfect for areas most often used by cars and vans.

With the 70mm speed bump, these will slow vehicles down to 5mph. With a heavy-duty design, they’re also suitable for any application, including cars, vans and HGV lorries.

Where shall I install Speed Bumps?

You’ll often find speed bumps alongside parking blocks in areas where vehicles and pedestrians share the same space, or areas where vehicles generally drive too fast. These are commonly placed at entrances, on the approach to pedestrian crossings, and in car parks at schools, hospitals, offices, factories, warehouses, construction sites and other industrial and commercial premises.

You should also consider that vehicles turning on a speed bump causes discomfort to those in the car, but will also damage the bumps over time, so should be placed away from junctions. Additionally, it reduces the likelihood of drivers stalling.

All speed bump kits and sections from Fire Protection Online are also supplied with shield anchor bolts, as standard. This allows for secure fastening to all tarmac, asphalt and concrete surfaces meaning they can be installed on any road surfaces and even in indoor locations such as basement and multi-storey car parks.

Speed bumps are a simple yet effective traffic calming solution for locations at risk of collisions, pedestrian injury or regular congestion. Whether you're upgrading your business facilities, or installing onto a private road, we have the perfect range of high-quality, long-lasting speed bump parts to suit.

What is the maximum height for a speed bump?

In line with Highway Regulations, the highest point of a speed bump should be no less than 25 mm, and no more than 100 mm.

The height of your speed bump will influence the desired speed of the vehicle. The higher the ramp, the lower the speed. Our 5mph speed bump is a height of 70 mm, whilst our 10mph speed bump is a height of 50mm.

How far apart should speed bumps be placed?

As with height, the spacing between speed bumps will help determine the average vehicle speed. The Department for Transport recommends a maximum spacing of 150 metres, however, this distance may involve heavier braking and acceleration than if spaced under 100 metres.

It's stated that 20 mph zones require hump spacing of 60–70 metres. So, a 10 mph zone would require spacing between 30-35 metres.

How to install speed bumps

Speed bump installation is quick and simple with our complete kits. However, before securing them in place, you should check the following points for optimum safety and product longevity:

  • Ensure the road surface is clean and undamaged
  • Ensure a flat, even surface that is flush with the ramp
  • The speed bump should be positioned horizontally across the road (at an angle, they are likely to become damaged by vehicles)
  • Set back from junctions enough so that any two-wheel vehicle can carry out a manoeuvre without contacting the bump

Our 5 mph and 10 mph kits contain everything you need for easy installation, including an even number of mid-sections and end caps with pre-drilled holes. You’ll also receive the exact amount of load-bearing shield anchor bolts needed to fasten the entire speed bump.

To install, just mark the position of bolts, drill the required holes to the correct size, insert the fixing and then secure the speed bump in place. We recommend drilling some test holes first.

What is the law on speed bumps in the UK?

Speed bumps are a type of traffic management equipment designed to slow down the speed of a vehicle to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. In the UK, there are many traffic laws and regulations that govern the installation of speed bumps. Which is why you should always consult the relevant authorities in the area before taking any action. However, if you are looking to purchase speed bumps, then bear in mind they should meet the following specifications:

  • They should be no lower than 25 mm, and no higher than 100 mm. For example, our 5 mph Speed Bump Complete Kit is 70 mm high, while our 10 mph Speed Bump Complete Kit is 50 mm.

  • They should be made of rubber or plastic to not damage vehicles.

  • They should be highly visible. For example, our speed bumps feature a chequered yellow and black pattern, along with cat eye reflectors.
