A 600g ABC Powder Fire Extinguisher may sound like a rather specific product, but that’s not entirely true. The weight does lend this extinguisher towards particular applications, but the presence of ABC powder is anything but specific. In this article, I’ll discuss the uses of ABC powder and why a 600g extinguisher is of distinct value.
What is ABC Powder?
ABC Powder is an increasingly popular extinguishant in the fire safety world. This is because it boasts the broadest applicability of all common extinguishing agents. The namesake of the powder is what gives it this status: it covers Class A, B and C fires. Class A includes common carbon-based combustibles such as wood, paper and fabric. Class B is combustible liquids, mainly petrol and oils (but not cooking oil). And Class C is flammable gases, think propane and butane. Hopefully that gives you a good idea of the range of fires that ABC powder covers.
I’ll now briefly cover how ABC powder works to extinguish fires. It smothers and subsequently suffocates the fire by creating a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen that’s feeding it. The chemical compounds in the powder make it expand when exposed to heat, which helps it create this barrier more effectively. The versatility of the powder is hindered only by the harm it can cause when inhaled or on skin contact. The need to avoid these things can make the extinguishant ill-suited to enclosed or otherwise poorly ventilated spaces.
So why a 600g Extinguisher?
Home and vehicle use for small fires. That’s it, in a nutshell. So why these locations and not a worksite or other facility? Well, unless you live in a mansion, it’s small design makes it ideal for small spaces and small fire risks. This is especially true for vehicles, so it’s no surprise that the 600g is featured in our car fire extinguisher range. And it is the Vigil 600g ABC Powder Extinguisher that makes this the perfect consideration.
It comes with a wall bracket and a range of screws to help fix it where needed. But if you’re looking at a car, then its adhesive Velcro strap may come in handy. This allows the extinguisher to be securely fixed to a carpeted (or similar material) surface, so no doubt you’ll find a place for it in most vehicles. And you will find a place for it, as being only 600g, it is a remarkably small fire extinguisher.
It may not be surprising that it is a one-use extinguisher, but most bigger extinguishers are as well. This size, weight, and the inclusion of ABC powder creates an item that is compact and wide-ranging in usability. It can be stored just about anywhere, fixed to just about anything, and can put out most types of fires.
Where Would I Keep an ABC Powder Extinguisher?
We’ve mentioned vehicles and homes, but where specifically? What kinds of vehicles? Caravans and mobile homes come to mind, but also very small vehicles such as motorbikes. You may find most other car fire extinguishers on the market go for BC as opposed to ABC powder. This leaves out Class A, combustible solids, which is probably the most common type of fire.
Caravans and mobile homes are likely to have things like curtains, more pronounced carpeting, clothes, and even furniture (Class A fuel sources). Kitchenettes come up here too, a potent source for fires (though a cooking oil fire is not extinguishable by ABC powder). But they still, of course, have the potential for both liquid and gas fires (liquid from the engine or gas from cooking equipment, for example), and so are perfectly serviced by an extinguisher that uses ABC powder. And of course, being just 600g, it couldn’t be easier to keep out of the way in an easily accessible location.
