A Clever Solution To Stop Your Extinguishers From Freezing

outside quoteYou should know the importance of having a fire extinguisher in your home or business premises. However, during the colder winter months you may not know the effect the cold conditions can have on foam and water fire extinguishers.

The Problem

Ideally you should store your fire extinguisher somewhere reasonably well insulated so that the contents inside do not freeze. This is especially the case with water-based extinguishers due to the simple fact that the water can change states from liquid to solid in freezing temperatures, meaning that the extinguisher will not discharge if you need to use it.

But what do you do if your extinguishers have to be kept outside, for example at a camping site, garage or farm?

The Solution

Fortunately there is a way around this – Water or Foam Extinguishers that contain antifreeze. The major benefit of this is that it means you can use the extinguisher in temperatures as low as -9 degrees Centigrade (with an ordinary extinguisher temperatures around 0 degrees Centigrade could potentially result in the internal lining of the extinguisher being damaged).

alarmThere are both 6 and 9 litre extinguishers with the antifreeze built in. What you choose depends on the environment you are in. For your own garage, a smaller model is appropriate whereas for industrial or business premises a larger model may be necessary.

In short, fire safety is an important concern, but it is also equally important to be aware of how your extinguishers are being stored and how to make sure that they are ready if and when you need to use them as this could make all the difference in an emergency situation.
