We often get asked, “What are intumescent cold smoke seals?”
To keep it simple: it is another term for the nylon or rubber smoke seal that is attached to intumescent strips.
Of course, this does also raise another question: “What is an intumescent smoke seal?”
What They Are
A smoke seal is a nylon pile or rubber strip that is attached to the door or frame. It fills the gap in between the frame and the door.
So, when a fire breaks out it stops smoke from passing through the gap.
This is beneficial when trying to escape a building as smoke inhalation kills more people than fire. Smoke seals are usually attached to intumescent strips.
You can probably remember school science lessons about fire-one thing that fire needs is oxygen. The problem is that with a lot of doors there are potential gaps full of air where the fire can escape. When they are exposed to heat these seals can then expand up to many times their original size. This means that any fire attempting to escape through these seals can be stopped.
A Simple Thing
This particular method of fire prevention is fairly simple and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance or putting together.
In short, whether you call them intumescent cold smoke seals, fire seals, or a filler to stop fire escaping through the doors, ultimately, it comes to the same thing – this simple bit of expanding material and a smoke seal could give you the time you need in order to get away from fire in the event of an emergency.
While 30 minutes or 60 minutes may not sound like much, when you are trying to get away it could potentially make all the difference.
An intumescent cold smoke seal may not be something people think of as quickly as thinking of a fire extinguisher or blanket, but it is worth getting the best quality ones and in bulk to get the best price.
