What are fixings and fittings?
Good question, given what page you’re on. A fixing is, for the most part, any mechanical device used to join materials and parts together. The leading examples of fixings are screws, nails, and bolts.
Fittings as a term is interchangeable with fixings, but can also refer to items in a building that are not permanently attached to the property; of course, we lean towards the former definition.
What’s the difference between fixtures and fittings?
Fixtures are basically the furthered version of the ‘alternate’ definition of fittings given under the previous question. They are items in a property that are permanently attached to the building, whereas fittings are movable.
In our case, however, fittings should be seen as similar to fixings, rather than a sibling to fixtures, so it would be best to push fixtures out of your mind for now.
What’s the difference between fastenings and fixings?
Very little. Actually. Fastenings are just about any hardware device used to create non-permanent joints, so if you find yourself saying fastening instead of fixing or fitting, don’t worry about it; it’s just that fixings are typically intended to be longer-lasting, while fastenings are expected to be removed or adjusted in time.
