Whereas smoke alarms are ideal for areas that aren’t exposed to steam or fumes, such as corridors, offices and bedrooms. The likelihood of a false alarm in these settings would be extremely rare.

Firex heat and smoke alarms by Kidde

At Fire Protection Online, we stock three types: hard wired, mains operated 230v alarms; a standard ionisation smoke alarm, the optical smoke alarm and a heat alarm, all with integrated backup battery in case of power failure. All Firex alarms are interconnectable with up to 23 Kidde Slick alarms or other Firex alarms, so you can easily create a network through your business premises.

Standard ionisation alarms should be used in areas where there is a lot of combustible materials, such as offices, paper stores, living rooms, etc. Optical alarms are used to monitor the same sort of fires, but are less prone to false alarms and the Firex model is one of the most popular in the UK.

Heat alarms should be used in or near dusty, steamy or smoky environments, where a standard alarm would be triggered. You'll find heat alarms in new build home kitchens, and it's a good idea to retrofit them into older kitchens for peace of mind. Heat alarms don't care if you burn the toast or singe the steak; they only activate when the heat in the room rises above a certain threshold, indicating a fire rather than a bad cook!

Why does my FireX smoke alarm keep going off?

The most common cause of a FireX smoke alarm going off (aside from detecting smoke) is a low battery or unreliable power supply. You should also check for any dust, dirt or debris near the smoke alarm.

How do I stop my FireX smoke alarm from chirping?

The smoke alarm will chirp at a regular interval, about once every minute, when the battery is weak and needs to be replaced. Turn off power at the main fuse box or circuit breaker before taking action. Check the user-guide for your FireX model, then remove the alarm and replace the battery.

What is the lifespan of a FireX smoke detector?

FireX alarms must be replaced within the specific lifetime of the product and tested anually. Alarms have labels showing when they were made. If you can’t see a label, the alarm is old and should be replaced. Hard-wired and battery-operated Kidde devices should be replaced every 10 years. Note: The manufacturer of FireX® branded products was acquired by Kidde in 2009.

Why buy a long life alarm from Firex

All Firex alarms we sell are hard-wired, so they work perfectly when the electricity supply is on. However, in the event of a power failure, or if the power needs to be cut in an emergency, the Firex alarms continue to operate, powered by a backup battery. All Firex alarm units have a backup battery; the difference is just how long it lasts.

The standard alarms feature a backup battery that will last for 12 months, and then should be replaced. The long life range of alarms are fitted with a lithium backup battery for the lifetime of the unit (6 years), so you can fix and forget until the unit bleeps to let you know to replace it.

How to install a Firex smoke alarm

For the safest installation of mains powered smoke alarms, we recommended this be carried out by a registered electrician.

For more details on how to install, follow this step-by-step video guide by Firex. Remember to make sure the power is switched off at the installation location before starting. You can always contact our helpful customer service team with any queries.

How to change the battery in a Firex smoke alarm

Changing the batteries in your Firex detector is easy – just follow the steps below

  1. Rotate the outer case counter-clockwise to release it from the mounting bracket.
  2. Twist the unit slightly to separate the parts and you should see the chamber where the battery is housed.
  3. Remove the battery (you can use your nail to prise it out, if needed).
  4. Replace with the relevant battery for your model, making sure the + and - are facing the right directions.
  5. Place the parts back together and rotate the unit back onto the mounting bracket.
  6. Check it's securely fixed in place and press the 'test' button for 5 seconds to ensure it sounds. You should also see the green light to indicate power to the device.

How to test a Firex smoke alarm

Mains powered smoke alarms have a steady green light which shows it's receiving power from the electrical circuit. To test the alarm, simply hold down the 'test' button for 5 seconds until you hear the unit sound – this will stop as soon as your finger is released. For interconnected alarms, you should hear all the alarms sound when testing. If this is not the case, and you only hear the unit you are testing, there is a problem with the interconnection and you should contact an electrician to investigate further.

How to disconnect Firex smoke alarm

To disconnect your Firex alarm, you should first switch off the power supply. Then twist the unit counter-clockwise to release it from the mounting bracket. You can then press down the plastic tab on the wiring connector to release the wires from the unit. If it struggles to come loose, use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the tabs on either side, and it should then easily come free.
