Caution, Warning, and Danger Signs

The triangular yellow signs, in some cases, are more eye-catching than the red ones. Though that has a lot to do with the symbols, and the words, that they employ. There are three key words, to be precise, and they demand disambiguation.

The first, and least severe in meaning, is Caution. This indicates a low-level risk that could lead to minor injury. Really, the use of the same striking colour and shape as that which warns of danger of death, is intended to keep your responsibilities in check rather than to save lives. You’ll want these placed around more for potential hazards.

The second word is Warning. Being one step up, it indicates a medium-level risk that could result in minor or moderate injury. This can relate to quite harmful materials, and is possibly the most common of the three classifications, as it is the one most often used to signify fire hazards.

And, of course, the final word is Danger. It indicates high-level risks that could result in death or serious injury. The use of this keyword should be limited to the most extreme hazard cases. These words are always the most prominent on the sign, and can be used to effectively discriminate between hazard levels in a risk-abundant environment.

Multi-message Sign Rules

You’ll notice a few multi-message signs on this page. These can be used to display several safety messages on one sign, which is great as it consolidates important information into a single point, helping to avoid the cardinal sin that is sign clutter. To ensure the highest optimised level of message comprehension, these signs should follow the design principles of BS EN ISO 7010:2020.

Multi-message signs can display different safety categories together on the same sign, either vertically or horizontally. But what you won’t find is one of these signs combining two different categories into one message; the messages are separate, just on the same sign. To pin this down: you wouldn’t see a symbol from one category placed in relation to a message from another, the symbol would have an accompanying message from its own category, while the message would be next to a symbol from its own as well. This should be consistently the case across all multi-message signs.

No Smoking: Your Business and the Law

If you are a business owner, you are required by law to take reasonable steps to prevent people from smoking on your premises or in your vehicles. No smoking signs will help you implement a smoke-free policy that your employees won’t be able to help but take note of. The signs themselves are a requirement on any premises with either staff or public access, and they must be at least A5 in size. Smaller signs, however, may be used in designated staff-only areas, or areas already outfitted with a larger sign.

In this category, you will find a few different multi-message signs that convey a no-smoking message. They are, however, primarily in relation to areas where flammable materials are being kept, and are paired with a similar ‘No Naked Lights’ message. While this differs a little from the standard use of generic no-smoking signs, they are still a popular choice, as they provide an essential notice for instances where smoking is arguably at its most dangerous.
