What type of foam is used for firefighting?

There are various different types of foam which are mostly used to extinguish flammable liquid fires. Essentially, firefighting foam is used to cool down the fire whilst creating a barrier for the fuel to prevent oxygen contact.

Low expansion foam – this type of foam has a high flowability and can be used to put out both liquid and solid fires. Low expansion foam comes in one tank and is cured by the moisture in the air. It generally expands by approximately 10%.

Medium expansion foam – mostly used for smaller surfaces and fires – such as chemical spills or road traffic accidents. Medium expansion foam can expand by up to 50% in a short amount of time.

High expansion foam – ideal for closed areas and building where a quick filling is required – such as warehouses, hangers and ships. High expansion foam can more than double in size with its expansion ratio of between 200 to 1000.

Alcohol resistant foam (AR-AFFF) – this type of foam is used on fires containing polar solvents and flammable hydrocarbon, typically industrial and pharmaceutical environments. Alcohol resistant foam works by forming a barrier between the fire and the foam so the alcohol in the burning fuel doesn't break down the foam.

There are also Class A and Class B foams. Class A foams help aid fire suppression and reignition of Class A fires, caused by combustible materials such as wood, paper and fabric. Whilst Class B foams assist with Class B flammable liquid fires.
