  • What are the different types of fire hose?

There are three main types of fire hose used for professional firefighting: Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.

Types 1 and 2 are made up of a circular woven jacket with a watertight internal lining. Type 1 is typically a general purpose fire hose with no external coating. Whilst Type 2 fire hoses have a durable external coating applied to prevent abrasion and liquid absorption.

Type 3 fire hoses are the most commonly used hose in the fire service. Their external coating offers even higher abrasion resistance. And they are designed to withstand the most demanding of environments and fires. Their heavy-duty construction also makes them ideal for agricultural use and building sites.

  • What are layflat fire hoses?

Layflat hoses have the same high-performance as traditional fire hose tubing. But they are also compact, lightweight and 100% compressible, making them easy to store and transport. Another benefit is that response times can be much quicker thanks to their flexibility.

It's essential that layflat fire hoses being used for fire fighting purposes meet the BS 6391 requirements. Find out more about the different fire hose variations on here.

  • How powerful are fire hoses?

Fire hoses are made from durable materials, such as nitrile-blended rubber and polyester. They are carefully constructed so they can withstand regular high internal pressures. The average working pressure during firefighting is around 10.5 bars, however it can be as high as 20.

The National Fire Chiefs Council state that the "Hose must be designed to give an adequate margin over pressure likely to be encountered and it is usually constructed to withstand at least twice the pressure to which it is likely to be subjected in service.". Our Type 2 and Type 3 fire hoses have a burst pressure of up to 45 bar, meaning they are able to take on even the toughest of fires.
