Smoke Detectors & Bases

For the best protection against damage and injury from fires in your premises, you should have a mixture of smoke detector types to ensure the fire is picked up as quickly as possible. This will also help prevent false alarms.

We supply a huge range of smoke detectors and bases – including optical, heat and multi-sensor – that are hard-wired for maximum safety. They link with your fire alarm control panel so that the system alarms the whole building of the hazard so occupants can evacuate quickly.

Our C-TEC and Apollo smoke detectors are IP42-rated and CE-tested, demonstrating their quality and impeccable reliability for life-saving security.

What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a smoke detector?

Smoke alarms and smoke detectors can be easily confused. A smoke alarm detects the smoke in a room and sounds the alarm from the same device. These are usually found in homes or smaller buildings.

Whilst smoke detectors are linked with a larger fire alarm system – usually business or public premises, like offices or schools. They detect the smoke/combustion, and then signal to the wider alarm system to set off the alarm sounders across the whole building.

How do smoke detectors work?

There are different types of smoke detectors with varying technologies that are intended to suit different environments.

Heat alarms are less sensitive to fumes and steam, and they will only alarm when they detect a significant change in temperature in the room (normally 57°C). They are best suited to rooms that have regular exposure to smoke or steam, such as bathrooms, kitchens or garages.

An optical smoke alarm (also known as a photoelectric smoke alarm) uses a pulsed infrared LED light that checks for smoke particles every 10 seconds. They are quick at detecting slow-smouldering fires and are less likely to have false alarms than other types of detectors. Optical smoke alarms are ideal for hallways, offices or any room away from humidity or steam.

Multi-sensor alarms have the best of both worlds, combining optical and heat technology for consistent monitoring of both. They are commonly used in hotel rooms or multiple occupancy houses. Our C-TEC ActiV Multi-Sensor device is certified EN54-5, EN54-7 and IP42 rated for optimal protection.

Do I legally need a smoke detector?

As of October 2022, all landlords and tenants should have smoke detectors (or alarms) installed on every floor of the property where a room is used as living accommodation. Local authorities can impose a fine of up to £5,000 to landlords who do not comply with these new regulations.

Business premises are also required to have a fire safety system in place by law. Smoke detectors are usually installed as part of the overall fire alarm system – which also includes a control panel, alarm sounders and manual call points.
