Like a lot of people these days, your time is precious and money is tight, which is exactly why the P50 Service-Free Fire Extinguishers are worth at least considering, especially in your business.

Most of the UK fire extinguisher manufacturers now have factories overseas (Eastern Europe and Asia), but these are proudly made by Britannia Fire in the UK. Their range of Britannia P50 Fireworld Fire Extinguishers is a fabulous UK innovation.

  • Are P50s Really A Service-Free Fire Extinguisher?

It’s important to remember that P50 fire extinguishers DO still require an annual service, but unlike all other extinguishers, you can do this yourself in-house without needing to pay for the services of an extinguisher technician every year. This makes it ideal for those in remote locations who struggle to get an engineer, sites working unsocial hours, and places with restricted access.

It is also important to remember that P50 fire extinguishers should be commissioned and installed by a trained fire extinguisher engineer – a service we offer at the point of purchase. This guarantees that the extinguisher has arrived in good working order, is positioned in the right place and is suitable for the locations and the fire risks around.

  • How Do I Look After My P50 Extinguishers?

After the P50 extinguishers are commissioned and installed, you can take over the annual inspection. Often completed yourself in less than a minute by following the simple instructions printed on the label, you visually check for obvious signs of damage, read the pressure gauges, make sure it is clean, and in the right place with any hoses attached and not blocked.

These annual inspections are then recorded on the back of the fire extinguisher in the text boxes provided, and a note should also be made within your fire safety log book. As part of your responsibilities, business owners need to be able to provide evidence that extinguishers are kept in good working order and maintained accordingly.

P50 annual maintenance checks involve the following:

    • Visually checking the gauge is reading in the green segment and the safety pin and tamper tag are in place.
    • Removing the magnet from the base of the unit and checking the magnetic gauge (the needle should move to show it is not stuck and reading the correct pressure).
    • Check the extinguisher is within the life expectancy by the colour date stud.
    • Sign the back of the extinguisher with a permanent marker pen.

There is also an app available for Apple and Google which allows will talk you through how to register and maintain the P50 Service-Free extinguishers in your premises, and will then guide you through the annual inspection.

The extra cost of these extinguishers is far outweighed by the savings and lifespan. Some estimate you can save £300 over its lifetime. Plus, the self-service P50 fire extinguishers do not need the 5 yearly discharge test and refill. That alone can save more than £100 over its life or the cost of buying a new extinguisher.

Of course, if you would rather not worry about doing this annually, our engineers would still be happy to service your P50 extinguishers on your behalf.

  • How Long Will My P50 Fire Extinguisher Last?

While most fire extinguishers are supplied with a 5-year warranty, Britannia offers a 10-year guarantee (when the inspection is completed annually) as standard with all of their P50 fire extinguishers. However, they actually have a 20-year lifespan, requiring a factory refurbishment at the 10-year point.

Instead of being made from metal, which could corrode and dent, the self-service extinguisher cylinder is protected by an aramid fibre, which is virtually indestructible. An incredibly strong, yet lightweight material, aramid fibre (also known as Kevlar®) was originally designed by the US military and is now often used in bulletproof vests and fireproof gloves.

The outer high-density polyethylene is also UV-protected to help prolong the durability of the extinguisher, even when located outside. The headcap (the handle on top) is manufactured from stainless steel and brass nickel plated. Together, all of these components ensure your durable P50 fire extinguisher is corrosion-proof and heat-resistant while remaining lightweight and easy to use.

When the fire extinguisher reaches the end of its usable life, it is then 100% recyclable.

  • Which P50 Fire Service-Free Extinguisher Do I Require?

Our P50 fire extinguishers are supplied with superior fire ratings when compared to their steel alternatives. And as our foam P50 extinguisher are live electrical equipment up to 1000 Volts, it means you could have fewer extinguishers with it replacing your combination of a foam and CO2 fire extinguisher.

Between our Powder and Foam P50 fire extinguishers, you can cover the most common types of fire you’ll likely need to protect against, including Class A, B, C and electricals. And for kitchens, you can select our Class F P50 so you’re covered for fires involving cooking fats and oils.

You can also be sure these are completely safe to use as all of our P50 fire extinguishers feature the BSI Kitemark, as well as carrying UKCA, EN3, PED and MED approvals.
