What Is National Fire Safety Week And How Can It Help To Raise Fire Safety Awareness?

Monday, September 24, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Every year there is a National Fire Safety Week to highlight issues of fire safety and awareness of the dangers. The week occurs in September or early October and aims to show the true costs of fire, both in personal and monetary terms.

There are also initiatives around the country to promote fire prevention and safety, and many ways that you as the general public can get involved in activities. If you want to know more about National Fire Safety Week, then this article will explain the history of the event and how you can get involved in fire safety activities.

History

National Fire Safety Week was initiated by the Fire Protection Association (FPA) many years ago. The FPA is run in conjunction with the UK fire services and is supported by a wide variety of organisations. Although there is no set date for the National Fire Safety Week, it generally occurs in September or October.

The FPA is based in Gloucestershire, and aims to improve awareness and educate about fires during the annually occurring Week-long event.

Aims And Objectives

The FPA uses National Fire Safety Week to promote safe fire prevention practices and to educate the public about the true costs of fire. The idea is to use events and activities throughout the Week to show people how deadly fire can be, but also show ways in which fires can be prevented and the need for fire prevention at home and at work.

Events And Activities

There are numerous activities throughout National Fire Safety Week, and details of the events in your area can be obtained from your nearest County Fire Brigade Fire Safety Department.

Events range from talks and open days at fire stations to educational campaigns and leaflets and literature to read. Each year has a particular theme, and highlights current pressing issues of fire safety and fire prevention.

Getting Involved

National Fire Safety Week is a great time for businesses and schools to get involved in fire awareness and prevention, and if you want you can organise a fire safety campaign of your own to highlight potential fire hazards and give advice.

There FPA provide various types of assistance to help you out, with a fire safety centre toolbox available from their webpage at >www.thefpa.co.uk. Here you can find all the information you need about setting up your own or getting involved in campaigns in your local area.

The Fire Protection Association is trying to expand the event each year to give better coverage and education to all areas of society, and help reduce the dangers of fire around the country.

Importance Of The Event

With fires continuing to be a severe hazard and potentially damaging to not just property and possessions but also to people’s lives, having a week to raise the profile of the dangers of fire and educating people how they can avoid these dangers is extremely important.

However, this can only be accomplished if more and more people get involved in the annual event and help organise more events to improve people’s access to knowledge about fire prevention throughout the UK

Do yourself or your colleagues a favour and ask how your organisation how help National Fire Safety Week.
