How To Properly Use A Fire Extinguisher When Putting Out A Fire

Wednesday, August 22, 2007 | Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Whilst many people have them, knowing how to use fire extinguishers is a different story. Most are quite easy to use, but it can be hard to follow instructions or use them properly when you are stressed at the time of a real fire.

That is why it is important to know how to properly use a fire extinguisher so that when the time comes, you can fight fires with confidence.

This guide aims to give an overview of the best techniques for using a fire extinguisher and the things you should avoid when attempting to operate particular types.

Be Prepared

Although extinguishers are generally quite easy to use, you need to be prepared before a fire occurs. Once a fire has started, taking time to read the instructions whilst in a panicked state could be extremely costly.

Therefore, you should always read the instructions and be familiar with the way the extinguisher operates before you need to use it. Keep yourself reminded of the instructions by reading them every once in a while, and always make sure that when a new extinguisher is purchased you again check the instructions.

Most types operate in the same way, but there are different ones so you need to make sure you can use them all in your home or place of work.  And make sure you know all the locations of the extinguishers so that you can get to one easily when needed.

P.A.S.S.

PULL The Pin

The first step to using a fire extinguisher is to pull the pin out. Once the pin is pulled out, the extinguisher is no longer locked and can be discharged.

AIM The Hose

You should aim the nozzle, hose or horn (on a CO2) at the base of any fire because this is where the fuel is, and this is the part you need to extinguish to stop the fire from continuing.

If you simply aim at the flames you will not stop the fire permanently and your extinguisher will be empty before the fire is out.

Squeeze The Levers Or Handle

Whilst aiming the extinguisher, you need to slowly squeeze the levers or handle on the extinguisher to begin discharging it. If you stop squeezing on modern extinguishers the discharge will stop, enabling you to move around and make the most of the extinguishant (contents).

DO NOT turn the extinguisher upside down and thump it on the ground like in the old days. If the label says to do this, it is too old and dangerous to use.

Sweep Back And Forth

Whilst you squeeze the levers you need to sweep the extinguisher back and forth across the base of the fire until it has been totally extinguished. Start at sensible distance from the fire and then move closer as it’s reduced.

Remember These Points

  • The most important thing to do is to aim at the base of the fire as this is where the fuel of the fire is

  • Never get too close to the fire until you know for certain that it is being reduced or that it is virtually extinguished, as you could put yourself in danger

  • If you have finished the extinguisher and the fire is not fully extinguished, you need to make sure you get out as soon as possible

  • Most home fire extinguishers will only operate for about 10 seconds as they are not usually big enough to fight proper fires

  • These basic instructions work for most fire extinguishers, but it is important to be familiar with the exact operation of your own

  • If you are overseas on holiday or for work, they probably work differently so check the labels

Fire Training

If it has not been offered at your place of work, remind your employer of their legal duty to teach you how to use fire fighting equipment with a fire training session. This will improve your confidence greatly.

Do not “test” extinguishers are they are designed to be used once and with the full contents.

Be aware of your equipment you are much more likely to put out a fire quickly and safely.
