The foam fire extinguisher is also a AFFF fire extinguisher. But, it's not foam like we used 30 years ago which was thick like shaving foam and smelled awful (due to animal "protein" being part of the ingredients - how many vegetarians knew that?).
Aqueous Film Forming Foam or AFFF (pronounced A-triple-F) has, in the last 15 years become one of the most popular all-rounders. Suitable for Class A fires (wood, paper, material, cloth, etc) and Class B (flammable liquids such as petrol, spirits, diesel), the AFFF foam spray versions are fitted with a special nozzle that reduces the electrical risk (tested to 35,000 volts). Foam extinguishers should never be used on live electrical equipment but the special nozzle will not conduct when it gets accidentally sprayed onto electrics.
This advantage has made the foam spray one of the best extinguishers in the modern office for years. In addition, a 6 litre foam fire extinguisher has the same 13A fire rating as a standard 9 litre water but weighs two-thirds the amount. Have you ever tried picking up a large extinguisher? On flammable liquids, the film-forming property prevents re-ignition.
To supply the highest possible guarantee of quality, our stock is made by Thomas Glover and Co so the extinguishers have genuine full BSi Kitemarks to BS EN 3, British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE) certification and CE Mark (a legal requirement under the Pressure Equipment Directive - PED) and a cream strip above the label on top of the red paint denotes a foam extinguisher. To comply with Fire Regulations and your Fire Risk Assessment, they should have an extinguisher identification sign above them.
At Fire Protection Online, we say our foam fire extinguishers have no equal so they uniquely have these three guarantees:
- 5 Year Manufacturer Warranty
- Low Price Guarantee
- 100% Satisfaction Guarantee
A suitable wall mounting bracket is standard with every unit but also take a look at our range of extinguisher stands in coloured composite and chrome. AFFF extinguishers should be on the wall at one metre high or on fire stands.
Also, have you seen the polished stainless steel version? These will look very impressive in a designer setting such as a modern office or shop. They also last longer as they won't rust.
To comply with the Fire Regulations, extinguishers must be serviced every year by a competent person (we recommend only to use a BAFE Technician) and all staff (including the boss) should have some form of fire training for a foam fire extinguisher and all other types.
