Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam fire extinguishers are a popular extinguisher suitable for both commercial and domestic premises. The foam acts as a smothering and cooling agent, while also sealing harmful vapours under a layer of film.

Foam extinguishers are the first extinguisher of choice for Class B fires, which are fuelled by liquids like petrol and paint. Because they can be used for both Class A and Class B fires they are particularly versatile and used widely in offices, schools, warehouses and residential properties.

Fire Protection Online stock high quality foam extinguishers manufactured by Thomas Glover, in sizes ranging from two to forty-five litres. These extinguishers are available in both traditional signal red, and chrome.

What is a foam fire extinguisher used for?

Foam fire extinguishers can be used for Class A fires, which are fuelled by solid carbon based materials like paper and textiles.

Fires fuelled by liquids such as paint or melted plastic are Class B fires. Foam extinguishers are the most common extinguisher for these kinds of fires. They are a versatile extinguisher, useful for both commercial and domestic settings.

Foam extinguishers are often associated with furnishings made from man-made polymers like polyester, because these materials can turn to liquid when heated to extreme temperatures.

Foam extinguishers are not used for electrical fires, or for cooking oil fires.

What colour is a foam fire extinguisher?

Foam extinguishers are signal red, with a cream label colour. As with other kinds of extinguisher they also come in a chrome finish, which is actually highly polished aluminium. These have a unique design which will be preferred in some locations, however while they meet all safety standards they are not BS EN3 certified.

How does a foam fire extinguisher put out a fire?

The foam from these extinguishers works in a combination of ways. It cools the fire’s fuel, removing heat from the fire triangle. The foam also creates a barrier between the fuel and the flame, as well as starving the fire of oxygen.

As well as putting out the flames themselves foam extinguishers also seal in harmful vapours.

What is fire extinguisher foam made from?

Aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) are water-based and contain water, foam concentrate and air. The foam itself is a stable mass of air bubble with a low density, allowing it to sit on top of surfaces (water can sink below other liquids, making it an ineffective extinguishing agent for liquid fires).

The foam concentrate is made from a number of synthetic materials including hydrocarbon surfactants, solvents and stabilisers.

Is fire extinguisher foam toxic?

Fire extinguisher foam contains a number of synthetic chemicals. While concerns have been raised about the methods of disposing of these chemicals (in relation to the environment and especially water sources), the foam is non-toxic and safe when used correctly.
