Fire Fighting Equipment Signs

All business and public premises should have fire fighting equipment signs to help locate and identify the device. Whether it's for a fire blanket, hose reel, fire extinguisher, call point or telephone, we've got the signage to suit.

All of our fire fighting equipment signs are made from durable Jalite AAA plastic for optimum longevity and visibility. Their photoluminescent coating means they can be seen by occupants at all times – even in a power cut or low lighting.

We offer a wide range of signs which are designed with recognised, industry-standard symbols. These include wall-fixed plaques which sit flush with the surface. As well as 3D panoramic signs which can be seen at all angles.

What colour are fire fighting equipment signs?

Fire fighting equipment signs should have a distinct 'signal red' background (which must take up at least 50% of the area), with white graphics and symbols. Fire safety standards outline that red is associated with danger and fire. Therefore, you will notice that all fire safety equipment is also red to align with these British and European Standards (BS EN3).

Along with the fire safety colour coding, red is also easy to spot in an emergency and in most environments - such as low-light or smoke-filled rooms.

Are fire fighting equipment signs a legal requirement?

In accordance with the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations 1996, buildings should have relevant signage to ensure firefighting equipment is easy to identify and access. It also states that "the signboard must be sufficiently large to allow the location of the firefighting equipment to be easily determined". For equipment that is hidden, employers must use directional arrows along with fire fighting equipment signs to help building occupants find its location.

All fire equipment signs should also adhere to the correct design and formatting as outlined in the regulations. They should be square or rectangular in shape and have a red background with white pictograms. We're pleased to share that all of our fire fighting equipment signs meet the BS EN ISO 7010 standards.

Do fire equipment signs need to be illuminated?

There is no legal requirement for fire fighting equipment signs to glow in the dark. However, the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations 1996 do advise that signs made with photoluminescent materials are beneficial in areas with low natural light. All of our fire safety signs are made from high-quality photoluminescent plastic to ensure equipment can be safely located at all times.
