How to choose the right fire extinguisher

Choosing the right type of fire extinguisher can feel overwhelming with so many different types and sizes available. Simply put, it all depends on the types of hazards in the building. This will determine which fire extinguisher you’re most likely to need in the event of a fire.

There are six classes of fire: A, B, C, D, F and Electrical. Each class is defined by what causes (or fuels) the fire. For example, a Class A fire (the most common) occurs when solid materials, such as wood or fabric, catch fire. You could use a water, foam, dry powder, or a wet chemical extinguisher for this type of fire.

Check out our simple guide on how to choose a fire extinguisher.

How reliable are our budget fire extinguishers?

Regardless of price, the most crucial consideration is fire safety certification when shopping for extinguishers. Are they BSI Kitemarked? Do they have the BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) and CE mark? These labels are confirmation that they have been tested and are continuously tested in the UK.

We only supply fully certified fire extinguishers, so you can safely know you're receiving genuine, compliant fire safety equipment.

How to maintain and service your fire extinguisher

All fire extinguishers should be commissioned by a qualified fire extinguishers engineer upon installation, and then serviced annually, in accordance with BS 5036.

It’s also recommended that monthly checks are carried out to check the extinguisher's condition. This is a simple task to check for any damage or obstructions and ensure the locking pin and tamper seal is intact.

What are the current fire extinguisher regulations?

If you’re a building owner, staying up-to-date with current fire safety regulations is essential to ensure you meet the requirements.

The Regulatory Reform Order states there should be at least a 13A and electrical coverage on each floor, which would generally be 6-litre water and 2kg CO2 fire extinguishers. However, if you're not sure about your specific needs, consider having a Fire Safety Survey where an engineer will visit your site and advise.
