Confused? Not sure which extinguisher to use?

STI Stopper – What?!?!

27 November 2009

Hmmm…STI Stopper – what on earth is one of those? Well, contrary to my first thought it is not anything to do with preventing sexually transmitted infections (my medical background comes to the fore in situations like this). No, an STI Stopper is, in fact, an anti-theft and anti-vandalism product, and comes in various guises from LOUD ALARMS to smaller devices. So now you know – never let it be said that my bloggage wasn’t informative!

Chances are you will spend a fair amount of money on fire safety equipment (although if you buy from Fire Protection Online you won’t be spending as much as you otherwise might have had to) and, naturally, you want to protect your investment as much as your safety. Obviously items like fire extinguishers need to be easily accessible in case of a fire, so they’re not an item that you can lock away to secure them. This can pose a problem when extinguishers starting ‘walking off’ of their own accord to prop open doors, or to leave the building altogether and take up residence somewhere else. This situation costs you money, but could also cost lives too. But panic not, one of this STI Stopper devices can sort out this problem.

An extinguisher stopper alarm is a device which fixes to the wall, and then a cable loops around the neck of the extinguisher. Therefore, when some little oick turns up and tries to go walkabouts with your fire extinguishers – hey presto! The cable round the neck pulls, drops out of the alarm device on the wall and an ear-splitting 95dB alarm starts wailing. I would imagine that this would deter even the most intent potential fire-equipment-theiver, and be sure to alert your security staff. However, if there was a real fire you’re not impeded from using the extinguisher, and the noise will be the least of your worries. The alarm is easy peasy to install (you just need to screw it to the wall – something even I could manage), includes a battery (so ready to go immediately) and also includes a deactivation device, so that if you do need to move the extinguisher for maintenance etc you won’t be deafened in the process.

Another annoyance can be people setting off fire alarms – and as someone who has lived in University halls of residence, I know all about this. It was usually during the early hours of the morning, and we had to all go and stand outside until the all-clear was given. Hugely enjoyable…or perhaps NOT! Well, there is an STI Stopper which consists of a tamper-proof cover, with a lovely lifetime guarantee, and it stops accidental, malicious and prank fire alarms – and has done for years. You can fit this over an existing call point, and if you really do need to use the alarn, simply lift the cover and use as normal. It has a 96dB alarm fitted into it, and (this made me v happy) comes in a choice of colours – hurrah!

So, if you are worrying about false alarms, or theft of your extinguishers, look no further. Whichever STI Stopper you choose, it will repay your investment over and over again. Tip top!
