Spring is Sprung!

1 May 2010

Oh yes. The birds are singing, the sun is out, little lambs are frolicking in the fields and daffodils and tulips are bursting forth all over the place. It can only mean one thing. Winter is behind us. And summer is on its way. Everybody say YAY!!!

Now I don’t know about you, but I am a summer sort of person. I love light, and the winter months can be really rather dreary. You get up in the morning and it is cold and dark. You drive to work with your headlights on, having spent ten minutes chipping away at the layer of ice that has developed on your windscreen overnight. You go to work and spend most of the day indoors where daylight is supplemented by artificial lights. Then you drive home in the dark, with your headlights on, and you don’t get to see your house in daylight at all. You become a hermit – not going out so much because it is cold and miserable. Weekend activities become indoor ones that you can do in the warm.

And then it changes slightly. Subtly at first. You notice that the ice on your car in the mornings is less frequent. When you get up in the morning, it is not pitch black outside. When you leave work there is an amazing sunset. And little by little daylight creeps back into your life.

There are other things too. Tiny little buds appear on the trees. The tips of the bulbs start emerging from the ground. And soon a green haze appears over trees and bushes.

Eventually, and all at once, Spring is unleashed upon the world again. It happens almost overnight. Amazing displays of blossom on fruit trees – they seem to be literally weighed down with the abundance of flowers. The boughs of the trees look like they are groaning with the masses of blooms. Hosts of daffodils appear at the roadside and in gardens. Bright yellow flowers after a season of dull colours. You see lambs in the fields on the way to work, and ducklings on the lake – scrambling to follow their mother as she glides across the water.

If you haven’t already guessed after my eulogising about this season, I love it. I love being outdoors again. Everything looks fresh and new. It smells different. I have a new energy, that was waning after the months of cold and darkness. I am a huge fan of Spring. So viva la season!
