Confused? Not sure which extinguisher to use?

Nearly New Year

31 December 2009

Happy New Year

The end is nigh!!! That is, the end of 2009, the end of the decade, the end of the “noughties” as dodgy DJs, journalists and people with no lives insist upon calling it. Oh yes, the New Year beckons, and tomorrow it will be 2010.

So, have you made your resolutions? The practice of making a New Year’s resolution is defined as ‘a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous’. It is named, because the commitments usually come into effect on New Year’s Day.

Popular resolutions include things such as improving your health – losing weight, getting more exercise, eating more healthily, drinking less alcohol and quitting smoking. Improving your finances is another one – getting out of debt and trying to save money – and this in one that is especially pertinent in the current financial climate. All that credit crunching has definitely got people’s attention, and people are more aware of their finances than they may have been during more prosperous times. Other resolutions might be to get better job, learn something new like a foreign language, start keeping a journal, take a trip, or volunteering to help others.

Well, I have decided on mine. Well, I say decided. I think that the decision part may be a lot easier than the actual doing part. I have decided to do some of that exercise stuff. Perhaps. Maybe. I suppose.

Wii UnfitNow, I am not what you would term ‘athletic’. Gyms to me are little more than medieval torture chambers, full of gorgeous people who are put there for the specific purpose of making me look bad. My idea of hell is to be stuck in a gym, bright red, panting for breath and sweating my guts out, whilst next to me someone is running on the treadmill whilst carrying on a perfectly normal conversation with their equally fit, healthy and beautiful friend who is indulging in the same activity.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am actually hugely envious of these people. I would love to look like them and be as fit as they are. For me, it is the starting out bit that is the most difficult. Oh, and the bit where it might make me a bit tired, and sweaty. So I have invested in a Wii Fit. This magic device is part of my Wii console, and allows me to play silly games like Hula Hoop, and will simultaneously make me svelte and fit. I hope. I may have also gone moderately overboard and ordered on of Davina’s fitness DVDs from Amazon today. Again, such things in the privacy of my own home is one thing. Having to be seen outside doing them is something else entirely.

So, here’s to New Year’s Resolutions. May they be good, motivating, and last beyond 2nd January. Happy New Year one and all…
