How to know when your fire alarm system battery needs replacing

Fire alarm batteries in the main system should be replaced every five years, as standard. Although fire alarm batteries are rechargeable, over time they will start to lose their charge and may need replacing beforehand. However, this is rare.

Most fire alarm systems will alert you to a low battery on the dashboard of the control panel. You will usually see a warning light or message appear if the backup battery requires replacing beforehand.

How to change a fire alarm system batteries

We always advise that fire alarm batteries be replaced by a qualified technician or electrician for optimum safety. However, the main steps for replacing the backup battery involve:

1. Unlock the main housing box using the key provided or screws

2. Disconnect the wires that are attached to the backup battery inside the control panel. The black and red wires should smoothly release when pulled in a downwards motion.

3. Take your new battery and connect the two wires back on, as before. If the metal tabs are covered, simply slide the covers off before connecting the wires.

4. Ensure the red wire is connected to the red tab. And the black wire connected to the black tab.

5. To be sure the wires are connected securely, give them a light tug.

6. Sit the battery back into place within the box.

7. Close and lock the box.

How long do fire alarm batteries last?

The longevity of fire alarm batteries in the main system varies depending on the type and manufacturer. They are rechargeable, but – like any rechargeable battery – over time, the charge will begin to weaken. We recommend Yuasa fire alarm batteries for the longest shelf life and unbeatable reliability.
